Whisper the name “muskellunge” in the ear of nearly any seasoned angler, and a slight shiver may run up their spine at its mere utterance. For good reason too…few fish in freshwater or beyond our coastlines can match the musky for sheer intensity and violence in combat, nor the craft and wariness so often associated with…and earned…by the dragon of freshwater.
To most, the thought of pursuing these fish over thousands upon thousands of acres of water to have a shot at one or two fish a day, not to mention the leverage then required to give the angler the upper hand in landing such a beast, requires nothing short of the biggest, baddest watercraft available to a civilian. Anything else would be absolute ludicrous… …wouldn’t it?….
Well, try telling that to Stone’s Throw Adventures Guides Jase Bouldin, native “Rock-Islander” and paddle-craft musky angler, and Cory Allen, big-boat musky angling convert to the advantages of kayak in skinny water Challenging rapids not long after he reared up two legs and said “Mama”, Jase became well acquainted not just with the sometimes beautiful, sometimes dangerous water surrounding his home…but also with the sometimes beautiful, sometimes dangerous muskellunge that incidentally prowled his paddling haunts.
Both Jase and Cory Allen have experience guiding the pristine and remote floats of Rock Island, Tennessee for the legendary musky, and utilizing the angling features of the Jackson Coosa Elite fishing kayak, they are able to take you into the jungle and hook you up with the tigers of freshwater in a way few have experienced.
All the excitement of musky fishing, from the bone-jarring boatside strikes to the jaw-dropping tail-walks and somersaults of their acrobatic combat style, can condensed into close-quarters “guerrilla” combat through the use of the Coosa kayaks in an experience not to be missed, whether you are an avid paddler wanting to go to war with freshwater’s most coveted trophy, or a die-in-the-wool musky nut who wants to explore new options and discover the wonder and fast-growing phenomenon that is kayak fishing for muskellunge.

Remember, muskies anywhere are a valuable part of the ecosystem and a true prize for trophy sport fishing in North America. They are too rare and precious to mishandle, endanger, or flat-out slaughter for meat or trophy mounts, especially with the fine fiberglass mounts available. We run a strictly catch-and-release musky guide service, but if a trophy fish is caught [usually 48" +] then I we highly recommend Fittante Fiberglass replicas [http://www.fittantereplicas.com/], specializing in muskellunge detailing. They produce the finest reproduction mounts available with the most attentive paint jobs and artisans to reproduce the fish YOU caught while still allowing it to swim away. Remember, fishing musky takes some experience to not only catch, but safely handle and release for both you and the fish…ESPECIALLY in kayaks.
If you get the “jones” to chase after these behemoths in any craft, but ESPECIALLY a kayak, we of course, recommend booking a trip with a special request in instruction on handling tools, their usage, and how to handle and release the fish, but even still, feel free to contact Cory Allen at 931-261-2483 for tips, suggestions, and recommendations on techniques and tackle that ensure the successful survival of the musky upon release, as well as protecting your fingers and hands.
